What –
The change I want to implement would be having a program that helps fund less fortunate POC to be able to afford better and more efficient lawyers. I also would want to bring awareness to not only the sentence for the crime, but how sometimes the time they’re sentenced is unfair because of their race. Also, I would bring awareness to programs that already exist such as the Innocence Project, which help free wrongfully imprisoned POC.
Who/When/Where –
POC (people of color) that have been wrongfully accused of crimes and sentenced to unfair amounts of time in prison. Also, how these accusations affect POC communities.
Why –
I personally have a family member who is wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit, and so far, has been in prison for 14 years. Though I don’t have an extremely personal relationship with him, I know that his immediate family (his girlfriend/mother of his children and children) were severely affected. This is something that happens a lot in POC communities which is not only affecting families but affects the community as a whole by adding to the already present stigma and stereotypes of these communities.

I think it’s important to talk about these issues even if they make people uncomfortable because it's something that needs to be changed. All throughout history, POC have been given the short end of the stick and constantly thrown to the curb. People need to rise up and not only acknowledge the issue but come together to force change.
How –
I want to explain myself by making sure I keep my tone highly informative, being that the topic is serious. I will be using my self-conducted interviews as evidence and personal insight into the problem and how it has personally affected them.
